Telecommunications in Cyprus are provided by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA), which is a Corporate Body responsible for the provision of telecommunication services both nationality and internationally.
Services provided include telephone, telefax, data transmission, mobile telephone (NMT900 and GSM), paging, maritime, TV transmission/reception, telex, telegraphy, private leased circuits, audiotex, video conferencing and internet.
The Authority is planning to introduce the Pan European Paging System (ERMES) and an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) in 1996. Furthermore, new value added services such, as videotex, X.400 message handing system and others will be offered soon.

TELEPHONE SERVICE

Two hundred and twenty countries (220) representing 98%, of the world’s telephones are accessed automatically from Cyprus.
For telephone inquiries regarding subscribers in Cyprus dial 192, whereas for foreign subscribers, country and truck codes dial 194.
 

Public Card phones and Payphones
Tele card or coin operated public telephones are installed at various central locations in all towns and villages, as well as at the International Airports, Harbors, Marinas and other locations.
Tele cards of £3, £5 and £10 denominations may be purchased from banks, post offices, souvenir shops, kiosks and from CYTA’s Area Offices in all towns.  

Coin operated telephones accept coins of 2, 5, 10 and 20 cents denominations.

All public card phones and payphones may be used for national and international calls. Dialing instructions, international codes and charges are available in all public telephones.    

Call Direct Service
This service offers visitors in Cyprus the possibility to call telephone abroad and charge the call to the correspondent's bill. The caller is only charged for one unit per call ($0.013).
For call direct callls dial the Special code number of the destinationcountry, who will ask for the telephone number you wish to be connected with.
Charging will commence when the correspondent abroad accept the call.
Calls through this service are cheaper than orrbinary collect calls. Furthermore, the caller does not haveto go though the operator in Cyprus.

Reduced Telephone Rates
The Authority offers reduced telephone rates for trunk and international calls during off peak hours:
Trunk calls (between  districts) 20:00 - 07:00 every day.
International calls 22:00 - 08:00 every day and all day Sunday

TELEFAX SERVICE
No public Telefax facilities are operational, but most hotels will permit their guests the use of their facilities.
For Telefax enquiries call 192 for subscribers in Cyprus and 134 for subscribers in others countries.

TELEX SERVICE
Two hundred and sixteen countries (216) are accessed automatically from Cyprus.
No public telex facilities are operational, but most hotels will permit their guest the use of their facilities.
For telex subscribers enquiries call 192.

TELEGRAPH SERVICE
Inland or overseas telegrams may be deposited at CYTA counters, through the telex service or by phone at telephone number 196.
Telegrams by phone are accepted from 07:00-19:00 hrs every day including Sundays and holidays.

MOBILE TELEPHONY
Travellers may use their GSM phones will in Cyprus provided that a Roaming Agreement has been signed between CYTA and a service provider from their country.

Because of the 10% service charge levied in hotels and restaurants, a tip is not obligatory, but small change is always welcome.

Taxi-drivers, porters, hairdressers etc., always appreciate a small tip.

Cyprus domestic transportation services 
One can travel around Cyprus either by bus or by taxi.
There are no trains in Cyprus.

1. Transurban buses.
    Various  Bus companies link all major towns with daily routes at specified intervals (e.g. every hours).

2) Rural Buses:
    Almost all villages are connected with the nearest town by local buses. 
    Bus operation is limited to ones or twice a day.
    Regional bus companies provide more routes.

    This operate frequently during daytime and in certain tourist areas, during summer, their timetables are   
    extended till midnight .

TAXI Service Facilities
1) Transurban service taxis: 
    (Shared with other passengers 4 - 7 seats)
    This service provides connection between all major towns of Cyprus every half an hour.
    Mon - Sat : 05:45 - 18:30 (17:30 summer)
    Sunday and Public holidays 07:00 - 17:30 ( 18:30 summer)
    Seats can be booked by phone and passengers can be collected from and dropped to at any place 
    they wish within the municipal boundaries.     
2) Rural Taxis:
    Rural taxis are allowed to be hired from their base station only.
    An exception is permitted, when hiring is made at the airport or seaport, where the taxi driver must
    present such document proving the collection of certain customers.
    Charging commences upon the entry of a passenger to the taxi and is based on the following chart.
    Taximeters in the rural taxis are not installed.
    a) Tariff  I: Single trip 20 cents per Km. Return trip at night (11p.m. - 6a.m.) 20 cents per Km.
    b) Tariff  II: Return trip, 15 cents per Km. 
    c) Tariff  III: Single trips at night (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.) 25 cents per Km.
    d) One piece of luggage will be carried free of charge. All others will be charged at 20 cents a piece.
    e) Delay or waiting time charge: For tariff I and II £2.00 per hour. For tariff III  £3.00
    f) Minimum charge: 75 cents.

3) Urban Taxis
     This is a 24 hours service provided  in all towns. Taxis can be booked be phone or be hired from their 
     base station. Urban taxis are provided with taximeters and charging commences upon the entrance 
     of passenger in the taxi and is based on the following chart:

Approximately 422 licensed (by the Cyprus Tourism Organization) Travel agencies ( plus 164 branches ) are in operation throughout the island, many of which are  IATA members ( November 1995 ).
A List of Travel Agents can be found in the Cyprus Tourism Organization's annual "Guide to Hotels , Travel Agencies and other Tourist Services" which can be obtained for all Cyprus Tourism Organization Offices in Cyprus and abroad. 
The Association of Cyprus Travel Agents ( ACTA ) also issues and annual directory giving the Association's major objectives and a list of its members.

Tourist Guides in Cyprus are trained and licensed by the Cyprus Tourist Organization which is the Government authorized operator of the "Tourist Guides School".
