Forests
- Name: Skiathos
- Description: Skiathos is the westernmost island of Northern Sporades.
The area of Koukounaries is situated
in the southern part of the island encompassing
the following: a) a mixed forest spanning
over 14,5 ha and consisting of Pinus
halepensis, Pinis pinea, as well as
of a sub-storey of hard-leaved shrubs
that descend to the coastline, b) the
Strophylia Lake covering a 9,5-ha-area
to the north, and c) a sea zone occupying
half of the area. The entire area is
bounded to the north, east and west
by the road and reaches into the sea
at 20 m in depth. The Strophylia Lake
is connected to the sea by a natural,
narrow and usually waterless channel
found on the eastern side of the forest.
The area lies almost at sea level and
rises to a maximum elevation of 1,50
m. The pine-forest which evolved in
the context of secondary succession,
superseded the once predominant Quercus
ilex.
- Notes: Any kind of activity is prohibited in the area,
with the exception of a golf course,
the conduct of scientific experiments,
and the construction of small tourist
units under proviso that they will be
located outside the confines of the
forestland and they will ensure a high
degree of environmental protection.
The forest covers an area of 500 - 600
m in length and 200-250 m in width,
and is bounded to the east by a natural
channel which is artificially widened
and deepened. The profuse sub-storey
of evergreen broad-leaf trees, the accumulation
of dry material, the lack of sunlight
and the anthropogenic disturbances seriously
affect water conditions that are favorable
to the growth of the umbrella pine,
and at the same time hamper the latter's
natural revival.
