In the middle of the Aegean sea spreads the complex of the Cyclades
islands. The name Cyclades refers to the islands around the sacred
island of Delos. The Cyclades comprises about 220 islands of which 24 are
inhabited. Pure in form and colour, the Cycladic architecture embodies
simplicity and beauty, the most characteristic feature, a point of reference for
everyone who has visited these islands which disperses in a distance of hundreds
of miles.
Each island is dotted with tableaus of striking white, boxlike buildings with
blue or green windows and doors. In port towns, these traditional
buildings generally stand out as individual cuboids with narrow alleys and
streets between them. In other areas, the cubed traditional buildings are
stacked so that from a far they look like giant steps up the hillside. The
unique landscape of the Cyclades islands makes the most beautiful
contradiction.
The rocks that mirrors on the blue crystal waters, the small white houses
scattered all around, the sandy beaches, the bright blue sky above: It’s
a warm and hospitable place. The boutique resorts and quaint villas featured in
this section reflect the simple, modest but sumptuous traditions of
Cyclades lifestyle.
