SISSI |

The first town we meet in the prefecture of Lasithi is the coastal village Sissi and is located 40 km from Heraklion and 25 km from Agios Nikolaos. A picturesque village with a charming port and beautiful surroundings where nature lovers can follow many biking or trekking paths. As it is a pretty well established tourist resort visitors can find hotels of all categories and furnished apartments. It also has a camping for those who prefer a different style of holiday. On the east side of the village the sandy beach of Boufos (with the international award of the Golden Starfish) is found and a little further on you will come across the beach of Avlaki which will give you the feeling of being on a private beach. An interesting sight in the area is the Milatos Cave which has eight entrances and is more a series of caverns than one cave. In 1823, the army of Turkish General Hasan trapped 2,700 men, women, and children in the cave and fifteen days later, after guaranteeing their safe passage out, the Turkish forces killed all the men and sold the women and children into slavery in Egypt. Later, the bones that remained were gathered together in a monument for the fallen heroes.
