AMNISSOS |

The ancient town of Amnissos, the harbor of Knossos, was built on the eastern end of the beach, atop the small Paleochora of Mesovouni. On the eastern slopes of the hills is a Minoan settlement from the Neopatial period with a terrace, stone-paved corridors,pier-and-door, halls, kitchen, a sacred room and three hall on the upper floor which is known as the "House of the Lilies" from a fresco of astonishing artistry with the stalks and the flowers inlaid in a white and blue paste. Excavators have called a smaller structure on the north side of the hill the
Customs House while on the west side is an outdoor shrine with a circular altar.
